what's hot - You Are What You Read for Educators
Use YouAreWhatYouRead.com with your students!
You Are What You Read, honored with a Best Website for Teaching & Learning Award, is a valuable tool for teachers to use with young readers to build excitement and community around books. Once you and your students create your Bookprints you can share these great reads with fellow book lovers, discover new titles, and connect with similar readers.
In addition, for every Bookprint created, Scholastic Book Clubs will donate a new book to a child in need through the non-profit Reach Out and Read, up to one million books. So get your students started in the One Million Bookprints for One Million Books campaign today!
If your students are under age 13:
Invite younger students to participate on their own on our You Are What You Read site for kids in the STACKS community or register multiple students together through Bulk Registration. Bulk Registration allows you to:
- • Sign up multiple students in just a few easy steps
- • Track which of your students have created a Bookprint
- • See the books in each student's Bookprint
- • Track the number of books your class helped donate to Reach Out and Read through One Million Bookprints for One Million Books
- • Email parents and print out take-home letters (available in English and Spanish) to encourage the whole family to get involved
Get started with Bulk Registration:
1. Log in with your Scholastic.com educators account.
2. Go to the My Profile tab.
3. Click on My Classroom Dashboard.
4. Click on Manage My Classrooms. From here, you can sign up students, email parents, and edit students' names.
5. Return to My Classroom Dashboard to view and track your students' Bookprints.
After you use Bulk Registration to sign up your students, you can always come back and add more students by editing the class. Students signed up using Bulk Registration will only be able to use their username and password on the kids-friendly version of You Are What You Read in the STACKS community, best suited for kids under age 13 and features book selections tailored to young readers.
If you share a computer with your students, you should clear cookies on your internet browser before a student uses it to sign up for You Are What You Read to ensure everyone gets to the appropriate part of the site. See www.allaboutcookies.org for more information about cookies.
If your students are age 13 or older:
Encourage older students to sign themselves up for You Are What You Read. Our built-in age screener will direct them to the community for older readers, where they will find books for their reading level and interests. Although you will not be able to Bulk Register older students and track their Bookprints, you can still view their individual Bookprints because all Bookprints are publicly viewable.
Students can sign up in two ways:
- • Create a Scholastic.com user name and password (create one here). Many teachers instruct students to create a Scholastic.com account. Once logged in, the student can go to "My Profile" to change his name by clicking on the "edit" icon next to his name. Some teachers prefer their students to change their names to "Lisa Period 1" or "Peter Room 316."
- • Use an existing social media log-in such as Facebook, Twitter, Google, MySpace, Yahoo!, or LinkedIn.
Please note that students age 13 or older can access social media features like commenting and sharing to Facebook, Twitter, Google+, MySpace, and Email while logged-in.
